Love your work, work for what you love, and change the world-all at the same time.

What matters most to you? Should you focus on earning a living, pursuing your passions, or devoting yourself to the causes that inspire you? The surprising truth is that you don't have to choose-and that you'll find more success if you don't. That's the breakthrough message of TOMS' One for One movement. You don't have to be rich to give back and you don't have to retire to spend every day doing what you love. You can find profit, passion, and meaning all at once-right now.

In Start Something That Matters, Blake Mycoskie tells the story of TOMS, one of the fastest-growing shoe companies in the world, and combines it with lessons learned from such other innovative organizations as method, charity: water, FEED Projects, and TerraCycle. Blake presents the six simple keys for creating or transforming your own life and business, from discovering your core story to being resourceful without resources; from overcoming fear and doubt to incorporating giving into every aspect of your life. No matter what kind of change you're considering, Start Something That Matters gives you the stories, ideas, and practical tips that can help you get started.

Why this book is for you:

You're ready to make a difference in the world-through your own start-up business, a nonprofit organization, or a new project that you create within your current job. You want to love your work, work for what you love, and have a positive impact on the world-all at the same time. You're inspired by charity: water, method, and FEED Projects and want to learn how these organizations got their start. You're curious about how someone who never made a pair of shoes, attended fashion school, or worked in retail created one of the fastest-growing footwear companies in the world by giving shoes away. You're looking for a new model of success to share with your children, students, co-workers, and members of your community.

You're ready to start something that matters.

If you’re having doubts, ignore them.
This book will move you from the beginning. Blake provides stories, tips and advice from his life experience & his experience in running TOMS. This is a must have! Seriously, buy it, read it, listen to it. You won’t regret it.

Inspiring story but content could be shorter
Is there anything you would change about this book?

one of the most likely to be a book, in this recent years. overall the best.

    Expected more
It is a good book but I felt like it was too similar to other books I’ve read. So I was expecting more.

Great story too bad he didn’t focus only on that
Can not recommend this audio. I respect that he was able to make a profit while helping kids who really need shoes, and found his story very compelling. Unfortunately, he waters down his message by going into how to succeed in business. Do I really need to read how to unclutter my workspace from this book? What bothered me the most was that he was just giving his opinions on business practices, but presented them as if they were best practices just because that???s what he did. While there was some good content like his story and the section on freebies, overall it felt drawn out and preachy in parts.

  8. Kia Neblett

    Simple, enjoyable, inspiring.
I really enjoyed this book, narrated by the author himself. It was down to earth and encouraging.

  9. Ashlee Galford

My daughter had to read this book for school. I typically read these assignments because I’m interested in what she is learning and so we can discuss the book. I can see how parts of it were relevant moral teachings, but it was really a book to help you think through starting a business which absolutely bored me. The fact that Blake was the narrator made it worse because it was a bunch of I did this and I did thats which got very old.

This is the story of TOMS
This is the story of how TOMS (the shoe company with a purpose) got its start and how it is run. Truly an interesting story with some examples of how other companies with a purpose got started. This is not a how to guide, rather, it is Blake’s story. The narration was not the best. I was just being read, without feeling or emotion (think back to reading aloud in school). Which was kind of a bummer for an inspiring book.

A great man with a great story
The great things in life are simple. As explained in this book-we tend to overly complicate ourselves and missing out on the blissful moment. The simple act of giving goes a long way for many and the returns are more then rewarding-they are true happiness! It has answered all my questions-now I need to act. Much Love, OH

    Creating a story.
I am preparing to launch a company and planned to donate a percent of profits to charity from the first day. Now, this book has inspired me to do more than just donate money. My product is not a direct one for one type of product, but I’m sure I can figure out an amazing way to touch lives.

    just what I needed
Everyday I wonder if I’m making a mistake. There is nothing about my vision that will not help someone else. But the fear of stepping out, the fear of making it my focus instead of making money has held me back. This book has not only inspired me but as I push through with my vision it redirects me when those negative thoughts set in. I loved the last chapter where he said it doesn’t have to be big it just has to affect. thanks Blake! I’ll be giving your book as a gift to someone for Christmas who also has a dream but does not have the strength to step out on it yet. Great book great concept great read great everything!

    Just do it
Not as the Nike slogan above, instead as the driving force to do something that matter, something that will make our world a better place. Thank you for helping me finding my purpose

  37. Arron Blank

Great story (what remains is a bit too long).
Blake Mycoskie relates his own story of TOMS Shoes (based in Santa Monica). The idea behind his company is: you buy a pair of shoes and a new pair will be donated to a child in need of shoes. What I hold through is the art of his storytelling: he has been capable to deliver the power to his customers to spread his message.

However I think that out of the 5 hours of listening, only the half got my attention ’cause the rest was not especially linked to his story- like business cases you’ve already heard a thousand times before. Despite this, Blake is passionate, down to earth and he never gives up so only for this, he deserves to be listened to at least once.

  38. Cary D.

I LOVE this audio book. This is the most inspiring story I have heard in a long time and has spurred some amazing changes in my business. Blake is an amazing dude and I love his narration as well.

  39. Rueben Kolander

Great guy, good story… mediocre business book
May be I was looking for the wrong thing, but I was waiting for some insights and lessons fro the guy who started this sensational business, didn’t find any though!

  40. Caron Roodt

Excellent food for a bigger story
I loved that the book is personal; that it’s not just a bunch of data compiled by the author, but that there’s names and people, and interactions behind the stories. It makes it much easier to accept and believe, that I too, can start something that matters. Great read.

  41. Jacqueline F.

    Alright. Not Great.

  42. Audrie Itani

    Business for humanity
Are businesses made just to make a few people millionaires? Can I start a business that not only sells products and makes profit, but also contributes to social causes? SSTM gave me answers to these questions. I was annoyed of the idea of starting a business in advertising, home appliances, mobile apps, etc. that will only cause someone or some people to get richer, while thousands or millions somewhere else barely survive. SSTM showed me how profits can be shared with social and humanitarian causes, how I can actullay feel good about the business I am running – knowing that my success translates into helping someone in need, how new businesses actually get more support when they have charitable goals.

  46. Celia N.

Nice idea generally. Shallow story and narrative.
Blake must be a wonderful person, but the narrative by him was really ‘dry’. The general idea is great, but the content around it was shallow and repeated itself.

  47. Billy Harison

    Full of Ideas!
What did you love best about Start Something That Matters?

  48. Jewel Macksoud

    Nice story, slow listening
    Any additional comments?

  49. Jackson Tariq

    You can make a difference
Great ideas of how to star a business and at same time fulfill a need.

  50. Randal B.

    My Man Speaks Truth!
He knows what he’s saying and communicates truth. This is a MUST read! Love it!

  51. Trudie Kamada

    Highly inspirational book
If you are looking for that extra push toward starting your own business or charity, this is it. Blake combines his own experience as well as the experiences of people he got in touch over the years and tells the story of YOU. You as someone who is capable to succeed regardless of obstacles. He inspires readers and gives them “YES you CAN” attitude, highlighting importance of the story behind whatever you might be doing.

Overall I enjoyed this book very much and I’m highly recommending it to the others who are looking to start they own venture while doing a greater good.

This is my fourth time reading this book.
Thank You Blake for writing this book. It is such a beautiful reminder of the power of humanity our power to impact change in the world and our power and responsibility as human beings to make life better not only for ourselves but those in our communities and around the world. it’s incredibly infective to read this book and know that the author Blake Mycoskie is the one narrating it which makes it that much more potent. I highly recommend this book to any entrepreneur startup, business leaders, non for profit organizations or social entrepreneur looking to find their way amongst the noise of capitalistic business building.
