From the bestselling author of What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast, powerful insights from 1001 actual days in the lives of high-achieving women.

Balancing work and family life is a constant struggle, especially for women with children and ambitious career goals. It's been the subject of countless books, articles, blog posts and tweets in the last few years, and passions run high in all directions.

Now Laura Vanderkam, the acclaimed time management expert, comes at the "having it all" debate by asking a very practical question. Given that we all have the same 168 hours every week, how do people who do have it all—women with thriving careers and families—use those hours? When you study how such women fit together the pieces of their lives, like tiles in a mosaic, the results are surprising.

If you work 40 hours and sleep 56 (i.e. 8 times 7) that leaves 72 hours for everything else. Vanderkam explains how her subjects use those "everything else" hours; why we work less and have more free time than we think; why it's a myth that successful women get too little sleep; and how women can have demanding jobs, spouses, and kids, and still enjoy a healthy amount of downtime.

She shares the time-logs from 1001 days in the lives of women who make at least $100,000 a year and still make time for their families and friends, for sleep and exercise, and for leisure activities they love. Based on what she learned from the patterns in those time-logs, she provides a framework for anyone who wants to thrive at both work and life.

    I loved the book!
But her reading voice could be a little mundane. When she talks about enjoying free time, she doesn’t really make it sound enjoyable. But once you get around that, awesome book. I got some really helpful tips.

  2. Antonietta Schan

    Pretty good
Interesting to hear real life examples. She basically just says to not do chores which can be nice to hear ?

  3. Lou Volmink

    It’s an okay book
It wasn’t interesting enough. I didn’t enjoy the way it was read. There were times that I just stopped it and did other things. However, I will not read a book without learning a thing or two and for that I’m thankful to Laura.
I will try other books for time management.

Not as useful as I hoped
I thought this book would be more specific about how women are structuring their time. But really, there is nothing specific. It’s very general advice

Such a great book for busy women and men alike!
This is a great book for men and women that work and want to have personal lives. I really like how the Laura states we have time to do what we want to do unlike the theories that there’s not enough hours in the day.

    Good and inspiring
This book is good and inspiring but it does get boring from time to time. I listened to within 3 days so it can’t get that boring.

As a young female entrepreneur, happily married that travel often and is planning on having kids sooner than later this book embraced my inner voice than once kids come most aspects of my life will change. Yes they will change but as all the women Vanderkam describes in this book I will make it work with some organization and mindfulness.

    There is time…
I personally really enjoyed this book. It is probably not for everyone with all of its statistics and whatnot. But it really made me see that I do get to choose what I do with my time. The author also gives you insights into how to look at time. And to how other women are using their time. It was very motivating.

Practical insights into how busy moms manage their schedules
I Know How She Does It is full of practical tips and examples of how real life moms who make six figures manage a full family life and stellar career. A few quirks in the way it was written has me giving this book four stars instead of five but overall an excellent resource for working moms.

    Great Tips
I read this book as my company was using it as the foundation for a panel discussion on work life balance.

many tips are things I personally do and I know they work.

It was nice to know planning my life is it not obsessive as some people tend to think.

A Book to take time for
I typically don’t take the time to write reviews. However, after spending the past two months listening to this book while I am in the car…I couldn’t resist reviewing. This book not only gave a lot of value and knowledge, but it actually made me think and think hard enough to put these things into action. It is a must read for anyone trying to figure out the life work balance.

  16. Arnold Steelmon

    Boring, repetitive, bad narration
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

  17. Allen Slackman

I loved the author’s concept on time management. She looks at balancing life, work, mommy hood, and self time over a week rather than daily. Changed my outlook. I would strongly recommend for women trying to find the balance.

    Must read for working moms
I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book because I thought it would portray perfect women. What I found is that Laura portrays women how are as busy as me and not perfect housewives, however they figure out how to fit so much into their lives. Laura’s interpretation of how they do it is beautiful. Her recommendations include: 1 – being mindful of the time you spend on the good, bad, and ugly vs the ugly overwhelming your perspective. 2 – Claiming the fun times with children in the small snippets and longer planned time. 3 – Plan for the snippets of time or unplanned opportunities to enable you to make the most of that time. There are so many great strategies.

    Awesome book
I read this book as I was going through some struggles juggles work and home, and it helped me realize that I already do “have it all” which has completely changed my outlook on life. much needed perspective shift
I am a working mom with a 2 year old and 5 month old. Coming back to work is HARD and feeling like you have no time is a constant state of being. This book helps to reframe my outlook on my time. I’ve recommended the book to many other women (mom’s and not) because of how I’ve appreciated the perspective.

  21. Bryan Melikian

  22. Domingo L.

    Loved it!
A must read for working moms who want to efficiently divide 168 hours a week between kids, work, husbands and “me” time.

  23. Nannette Linear

Not mad that I bought it. Some good thoughts and ideas
there is nothing totally earth shattering and new in this book but it was helpful to see how other successful women manage their time and squeeze in some fun into a busy schedule. The author writes beautifully so it was nice to listen to.

  24. Heriberto Bilberry

    Practical and informative
I loved the use of real data and statistics. This book encouraged me to track my own time to see where I was really spending it and how to rearrange it to make it look more like what I envision. The practically of the concepts and straightforward tips and recommendations help to set up a plan for long term implementation recognizing that there are no quick fixes.
