While Italian registered nurse, Simona Carletti, visits her terminally ill Aunt Umberta in the States, Hurricane Katrina hits and she's asked by the hospital to care for a wealthy Italian businessman, Giacomo Conti, injured during the hurricane. Simona takes the job which allows her to sit by her dying aunt's beside until she passes. When Giacomo is fit to travel, Simona is asked to accompany him back to Italy until he has fully recovered. Shortly after returning to Rome, she finds a lump in her breast and her entire world starts to crumble. She has no family or friends to turn to and needs to undergo surgery and chemotherapy.
Suddenly, the tables turn as Giacomo, with the help of his family since he's still convalescing from his injury, steps in to help Simona get through the cancer treatment. In the process, he realizes he's falling in love with her but she on the other hand tries to ignore it, believing he would eventually lose interest in her. She fights to maintain her independence and slowly comes to understand that she needs to accept the helping hand. Giacomo's patience and his love for Simona slowly open her heart, making her realize that she has feelings for him as well. This story continues in Book 3 – Serena's Cellars.
