What are my qualifications to write this book? None really. So why should you read it? Here's why: I'm a little fat. If a thin guy were to write about a love of food and eating I'd highly recommend that you do not read his book.

Bacon. McDonalds. Cinnabon. Hot Pockets. Kale. Stand-up comedian and author Jim Gaffigan has made his career rhapsodizing over the most treasured dishes of the American diet ("choking on bacon is like getting murdered by your lover") and decrying the worst offenders ("kale is the early morning of foods"). Fans flocked to his New York Times bestselling book Dad Is Fat to hear him riff on fatherhood but now, in his second book, he will give them what they really crave-hundreds of pages of his thoughts on all things culinary(ish). Insights such as: why he believes coconut water was invented to get people to stop drinking coconut water, why pretzel bread is #3 on his most important inventions of humankind (behind the wheel and the computer), and the answer to the age-old question "which animal is more delicious: the pig, the cow, or the bacon cheeseburger?"

    Great, now I’m hungry…
Fortunately I’ve just been given several excellent choices of meals and places to acquire them!

  2. Waldo Kasky

    Right On Point
Funniest book I’ve ever listened to. Gaffigan must of covered everything there is, about food. Every mini chapter made me laugh. Shellfish are bugs, we’re eating bugs!

  3. Georgine Sutyak

    Fun romp through food
This is a great book to listen to on the road. Gaffigan does a great job of making his food preferences clear—so even if you don’t agree you can listen and enjoy. Lighthearted and fun!

  4. Marcus Southworth

    Better than a Delicious Cheeseburger!
If you are a “foodie,” or better yet, an “eatie,” this book is most definitely for you. Gaffigan deftly weaves his way through the different food groups and restaurants with his usual hilarious swagger. He reads this book which makes it even better. The only way this book could be enjoyed more, would be to listen to it while eating your favorite meal!

  5. Bradly Thieklin

    I laughed out loud
He is such a funny guy. I’m sure I looked strange laughing out loud as I was driving alone my car. Looking forward to seeing a live performance!!

  6. Jamee Widjaja

He spoke to the heart of me
or at least to the blocked located there. The rest of this is to meet the minimum words required to submit my short concise review of the book.

  7. Renda Guerra

    Hilariously Clever
This is certainly a great buy for anyone who loves witty, slightly self-offensive comedy. Who doesn’t love Jim Gaffigan?!!

  8. Elisabeth Mascagni

    Excellent BOOK, Don’t Expect Stand-Up
What made the experience of listening to Food: A Love Story the most enjoyable?

  9. Edna Kerker

    Laugh out loud funny!
I am sure my neighbors wonder what is so funny about cleaning off my deck. This book made me laugh so loud and long I would have to stop it for a while to catch my breath just sit down. I will listen to it again because I missed so much of it by laughing so loud I couldn’t hear parts.

  10. The Rogers Family

    Still Hilarious!
Jim Gaffigan has written another funny and relatable book. Narration is better this go round, like he had better direction. Great book!

  11. Lucila D.

Jim Gaffigan and his wife make everything funny
Funny stories about food and his relationship with food. Jim Gaffigan is a great comedian and author.

  12. Branden Lansford

Got us through a LONG car trip!!
Hilarious and easy to listen to in the car. Enjoyed very much. Thank you Jim!!!

  13. Melanie Wilson

    Better than Prozac
I started listening to this book when I was feeling a little low. I read one review of this that said you could expect to laugh out loud a few times. I think that reviewer was on Prozac. I understand it’s hard to laugh when you’re on it. But if you are not on psychoactive drugs, you can expect to laugh more than a few times. In fact, my only real complaint about this book is that I would laugh out loud and couldn’t hear the next joke. I’m just going to have to listen to it again. I am honestly grateful that Jim and his wife have shared their immense comedic talents with us through this book. It’s works better than Prozac.

  14. Kit Ripke

    loved it
funny book for Gaffigan fans. plays to the eating humor. well performed. I recommend this book.

    Very funny
No real story line, but there are quite a few jokes about food I will always remember. Very interesting

  16. Jorge M.

    Get it
I friggin loved this book. Gaffigin just covers everything and nails it. A must listen

  17. Kendall Guillan

Enjoyed his “mini plays”, ridiculous hypothetical scenarios and character voices throughout the book. A great way to spend my commute.

  18. Antonia Ardd

    Laugh out loud
What does Jim Gaffigan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

  19. Ben Shorthair

    Exquisitely Appetizing
The only appropriate word for this novel is delicious. 15 words minimum so how about yummy, scrumptious, and delectable.
There am I over the minimum, can I post the review now?

  20. manssorameer

    master piece
I Listened to this book two times and still can’t get enough of it. funny and creative.

    I’m now a Gaffigan fan
Would you consider the audio edition of Food: A Love Story to be better than the print version?

  22. Branda Kantor

Now I have to nosh my way across country..
Where does Food: A Love Story rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

  23. Guadalupe L.

I didn’t agree with all his opinions, but my funny bone was tickled. his delivery was perfect.

  24. Gary Tufo

    like candy
some good jokes. lots of bad advice. the various chapters certainly caused me to want to go and get the food topic, like bacon

  25. Kenneatta

    very entertaining
great storming telling by the author. his love for food and passion for what he eat is very understandable.

  26. Daren Zibert

if you’ve listened to any of his stand up comedy acts then you’ve heard everything in this book. it’s word for word the same at points. very little original content.

  27. Branden Bink

    Makes Me Hungry
    Any additional comments?

  28. Arnita Termilus

    Very funny
The whole family listened to this driving to our summer vacation spot. I got laughing so hard, I almost ran off the road. Good clean fun.

  29. Randall Harrer

    Prepare to laugh without mercy
I could have listened to this from cover to cover in one sitting. its charming and real and relatable and funny of course. Finally, Its a insightful story. Truth through humor.

    Not the Same
I purchased Gaffigan’s book during an service sale thinking it would be some of the best money I’d spend that week. As a fan of Gaffigan’s comedy specials and him in general, I expected the book to read like a comedy set. However, it felt dry, impersonal, and stretched for far too long. I experienced the same problem with Amy Poehler’s book and suspect for some comedians their work doesn’t transfer as well to an audio format – that they need a physical presence with their work to help communicate it effectively to the audience. I still like Gaffigan and cannot wait for him to perform a new set, but now I’ll think twice before buying a comedian’s book – even if he’s the narrator.

  31. Maribeth H.

    my stomach hurt so much!
so funny!!! love him! his take on food is worth every minute. a must listen

  32. Essie Stecklair

Seven hours of JG stand up
I loved listening to this because most of the time it’s like listening to a very extended version of Gaffigan’s stand up specials. Yes, some parts are the same humor you’re already familiar with if you’re a JG fan (some parts are verbatim, actually) but it’s very enjoyable if like me you just can’t get enough his humorous take on food 🙂

The only reason this gets 4 stars on performance are because there are certain moments when you can definitely tell Gaffigan is not used to narrating. There are some awkward pauses that other narrators, I think, would have reread or edited. However, these are minor and are absolutely NOT a reason to pass this audiobook up.

Last but definitely not least: I don’t recommend listening to this all the way through, and by that I don’t mean “don’t listen to this in one sitting.” I mean, listen to a few chapters, and move on to another book, then come back to it. Or listen concurrently with another novel or two, choosing Jim when you’re in the mood for something lighthearted. When you listen to this one too heavily, the humor tends to feel repetitive and you find yourself feeling like you should think this part is funny, but you just can’t work up a chuckle.

Overall, good for anyone, but GREAT for foodies — or, “eaties”, as Jim would have it 🙂

  33. Chiquita Vongsamphanh

    Same ole Same ole
What disappointed you about Food: A Love Story?

  34. Ramonita Scrichfield

if you’re a fan of Gaffigan, or food, or both, you WILL love this book.

  35. Jade Nordenstrom

    always funny, Jim gaffigan!
I’m a fan of JG’s stand up, and this book is an elaboration of his best works. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audio and had quite a few laughs driving to work. If you’re one who only laughs the first time you hear a punchline, this may not be the choice for you.

  36. Karlie Passey

    Jim Gaffigan Does It Again
…in a good way of course 🙂 Few authors could craft a book made entirely up of interactions with food with such wit and cleverness. An excellent companion to his previous “Dad Is Fat.”
    Excellent writing and performance

  37. Waldo Benson

    Perfect in every way
Like a spoon full of sugar, this book was an easy read and so fun to listen to.

  38. Neville Rodinson

    A Foodie’s Journey
This book describes the history of the foods we love, the people that hate it, and why it’s far better and has greater depth than we expected. A fun book.

  39. Lisa Judge

I would love to be married to Jim Gaffigan; he’s like comfort food.
Gaffiagan; what kind of name is that ? …It’s a comics name.

  40. Carlo Zheng

    As Advertised.
What would have made Food: A Love Story better?

  41. Lady Casilles

Borrows a lot from his standup
Normal, funny Gaffigan, with fewer high-pitched voices than his stand-up act. He is able to find humor in the everyday and this book is another good example. Fun, quick listen, but if you follow his work, there will be a lot of it regurgitated in the book.

  42. Melodi A.

    Very Funny!
Made our road trip go by fast! We were laughing the whole way through the book.

  43. Stanton Stehney

    Any additional comments?

  44. Kevin

    Laugh out loud funny!
Really terrific. Very funny and yet completely on point. Thank you Jim. It was worth every minute

  45. Marcel Alexaki

Had me laughing like a nutbag
What did you love best about Food: A Love Story?

  46. Vada A.

    Laughed out loud
Love when the author does the reading and only Jim Gaffigan could’ve read this book and made it funny. If you’ve seen his stand up, you’ll recognize a lot of it already but you can hear his jokes over and over and still laugh.

  47. Kris D.

    No new Material
As a huge Jim Gaffigan fan, I was disappointed by the lack of new material or insights in this book. If you’re familiar with Gaffigan’s stand up, then there is no need to read this because it’s just a book version of all of his food jokes, which are decidedly funny, but I’ve heard them all 10,000 times before.

  48. Fredric C.

It was comic gold, like burra but better, like BACON BABY, LIKE BACON!

    Just like his comedy specials!
Loved it! Though some of the same stuff that you’ve already heard in his stand-up shows, still quite funny presented this way. Had to pause it a few times because I was laughing too hard while driving!

  50. Nan Behrends

    Hungry for more!
Love me some classic Gaffigan! Funny stuff! A mouth watering trip down the guilty food isle.

  51. Houston Merna

i laughed so much my face hurts! must read
great book. good clean fun. snot on a rock. hot pockets. have a good laugh

  52. Roger R.

    Amazing book
This is a true masterpiece. I only wish he wrote more books then just his two.

  53. Adam Rhee

    Don’t listen while hungry!
Sometimes you need a book that makes you laugh. Jim is a food lover but not a foodie and I found myself agreeing out loud to many parts of the book.

  54. Valrie C.

    A must have book!
I am a huge fan of Jim Gaffigan. I have seen him live and own all of his stand-up specials. With that said I loved this book. Even if I had never heard of him before I would have still enjoyed this book.

  55. Janell Spiker

Gaffigan is made for audiobook! great for laughs on a long road trip. It’s basically his stand-up

  56. Cathleen Bonno

    Will Make You Laugh
Jim’s wit and delivery will give you plenty of laughs throughout the book. It was a pleasure to read it – you also get a bit of a glimpse of what kinds of food are popular across the country so that’s a bonus!

  57. Brittany O.

    100% entertaining!
I loved this audio book! I bought it for a road trip from PA to FL and it was so entertaining. You will be happy you bought it. if I had just bought a paper back book I do not think I would have liked it as much. But with Jim reading his book to us, his voice brought a comic flare that my own inner voice would not have done. I highly recommend this book.

  58. Georgine Sutyak

I get he’s Lazy but come on Jim!
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

  59. Alaina Johns

    No brain food here
This is a pack of pedestrian writing recycled from the same kind of comedy bits Gaffigan’s been doing for years. Surprised by how little flair he has as a writer.

  60. Neomi Overman

    He’s talking about food
The beginning was good. I got hooked, but after he just talk about food. I got bored when it became repetitive. He name the food and then just talk about it. Rinse and repeat. What I learned from this book is you can talk about anything and make it interesting. When he was talking about food, it sounds so awesome! I’m so hungry

  61. Conrad Tarter

    the best
I really enjoyed this book and it’s my third time reading it. it’s one of the funniest books ever

  62. Kai Melito

Don’t get this if already heard standup
If I hadn’t already heard all of Jim’s standup already, this would be a great book.

Unfortunately, this is just a script mash up from his standup career.

I think he and his publisher should be ashamed to sell this.

  63. Customer

    Laugh out loud -hilarious
Loved it….and will listen over and over. insightful too! Jim Is a great narrator and i shared so many of his views of food.

  64. Odell Shoals

    Title says it all
What does Jim Gaffigan bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

  65. Wenona Darbonne

    For the Food Lover
If you love Jim Gaffigan’s comedy you will definitely love this book as it is written similar to his stand-up!

  66. Rodolfo P.

Making me smile in Rush Hour
JG is a fantastic narrator for his own book! I found myself smiling in a sea of crabby people during the rush hour commute (crawl). An awesome comedic escape in a not-so-comedic situation. Jim is my official driving buddy (don’t worry Jeannie knows)

  67. Aubrey Grune

A fun audio book ! Enjoy!
I walk my dog and love listening to audio books. I decided to listen to a different genre than usual. I turned on this book and was delightfully entertained. I kept laughing out loud while I was walking my dog! I enjoy humor that is not littered with foul language and rated “R” content. This was truly a delightful and light-hearted comedy. The delivery by the author/comedian makes this a great read!

  68. Donn Aumavae

Overly Long, but quintessential Jim Gaffigan
Who doesn’t love Jim Gaffigan? I mean, here is a guy, who manages to do very funny comedy and not wallow around in sex and vulgar language AND he is a faithful husband with five kids. Needless to say, he’s my favorite comedian.

This book is a summation of much of his standup comedy about food. It suffers from being overly long, but salvages itself with good humor, like:

“It can be startling how large a check can be when you go out to dinner. How can it be that much? Did someone order furniture?”

“The best Asian food is undeniably Thai food. Congratulations, Thailand, I’m sure as a country you were waiting to hear what an out of shape fat guy on the other side of the planet felt about your food.”

“The moment you enter most Waffle Houses you get the sense that the staff quit caring a long time ago, or never did. You’ll never hear “nice job cleaning up” at a Waffle House. If you’ve never had a chance to go to a Waffle House, simply imagine a gas station bathroom that serves waffles.”

    Got to love Jim Gaffigan

  69. Otelia Polek

    Fantastically FUNNY.
Fantastically FUNNY. That’s about all, but this review is required to be 15 words long.

  70. Kelly

Never knew food could be so funny
If you could sum up Food: A Love Story in three words, what would they be?
