Four men, one calling: to serve and protect. As law enforcement officers, Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, and their partners willingly stand up to the worst the world can offer. Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. While they consistently give their best on the job, good enough seems to be all they can muster as dads. But they're quickly discovering that their standard is missing the mark. They know that God desires to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, but their children are beginning to drift farther and farther away from them. Will they be able to find a way to serve and protect those who are most dear to them? When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God . . . and to their children? Bestselling author Randy Alcorn brings the heart-pounding drama of the screenplay by Alex and Stephen Kendrick to this inspiring novel that also includes subplots, characters, and backstory not seen in the movie.

    A “Must” Listen
I listen to audio books to help me fall asleep. This one kept me sleep deprived for several nights as I listened. The book made me laugh, cry and cheer. Roger Mueller does an awesome job narrating, even the women sound believeable.

    The world needs more fathers
The message of being a father to our children is often lost in today’s society. So many people believe a child does not need to have both parents involved in their lives; that they’ll turn out just fine. While at times a child does turn out “fine”, the truth is that the odds are significantly stacked against them. This story really drives home the fact that we, as father’s, are not just “sperm donors.” We have a moral, and even more a spiritual, obligation to raise our children so that the decay of society does not fill that vacuum should we choose to not be part of our children’s lives. While the story in this audiobook gets a little long in some places, it’s still a truly inspiring story that should remind and motivate us as father’s to make the proper raising of our children one of the most important goals we could ever set for ourselves.

    Great movie ok book
I’m a little torn on this review because I love the storyline, the people and the message. the problem I have is that with this novel from a movie the author tried to hold everything in the movie while adding to the plot which made it seem a little choppy. The are some good new twists and a couple of ok new personalities that could have added to the book but instead they seemed forced. this is my first book by this author so I’m not sure if it’s him or the circumstances. I do know this…. when these brothers had War Room made into a novel they did it right so don’t give up on the idea. Also lose the music between chapters ?.

Like the movie? Read the book!
I read the book then watched the movie. The authors did a great job filling in the gaps with more characters and expanding the plot. I sure hope there’s more to come with similar Christian themes!

  24. Russel Malkasian

I often struggle with narration for audiobooks, but the narrator on this book really complemented the story, not detracting from the content at all.

The author’s were not afraid to tackle the tough issues of fatherhood, and the responsibilities fathers face. It is definetly a thought-provoking read. I am hoping to see the movie created by the author’s also. I recoomend it!!

    Excellent story and narration
I had watched the Courageous movie video, so wasn’t sure what to expect with the novel. At first I found it curious that much of the story and dialogue followed the movie so closely, but then Randy Alcorn began fleshing out the story and I began getting to know more about the characters. He also developed some other characters and bylines that added to the story. The narration was excellent, and I ended up enjoying the audiobook as much as or more than the movie.

Average at best too much detail
I really like Randy Alcorn’s work and have read several of his offerings. So far I am only less than two hours in the first part and don’t feel I will proceed any further. For me, there is too much time wasted developing unnecessary characteristics of each of the novel participants and mundane homey details concering their interactions. I kept waiting for some real meaty story features but none have developed in almost two hours of listening.

Roger Mueller attempts to represent each character via a voice inflection/accent but does not get it quite right because of the many ethnic/gender/age variations in the story.

Because this such a long read and I can’t seem to get into the rythem of the presentation, I will put it aside for the time and maybe revisit it again in the future. If I eventually complete the novel, I will update my evaluation.

    Inspirational and entertaining
Courageous helped me become a better husband and father. I listened to this book while driving to/from work, doing the dishes, excercising, etc. I couldn’t get enough.

  33. Myrtle Mccallie

    Christians will love it!
I appreciated the law-enforcement aspect and portrayal of the life of a law-enforcement officer; the story had interesting surprises, but became too “preachy” for my taste.

  34. Julie

    A thoroughly enjoyable listen

What is all the hype about?
Another one that I forced myself to finish. Too much hype about the book/movie ruined it for me to the point that I have the movie unopened. Too much packed into one story for me.
I have never liked Randy Alcorn but thought I would see if this was different.

Bottom line – not for me.
